LEADER ASSASSINATED IN GRAND RAVIN

by Tom Luce 9.22.06

Esterne Bruner , Coordinator, Grand Ravin Community Human Rights Council, assassinated 9/21/06

by Tom Luce, President of Hurah, Inc.

Mr. Esterne Bruner, father of 6 children, coordinator of the Grand Ravine Community Human Rights Council (CHRC-GR), was assassinated Thursday morning, September 21, after he returned from a meeting at AUMOHD concerning the Grand Ravine Massacre #2. Mr. Bruner hosted Bill Davis, Hurah Secretary and me on Sept. 3, 2006 and showed us the more than 200 torched houses.

The picture here was taken with me as we stood in the door way of a burned out house. I met his wife and children. As coordinator of the CHRC-GR Mr. Bruner worked long hours in his community and with all concerned in the aftermath of this summer's brutal massacre and house burnings to get the legal pieces in place and to help the victims who still had not had their funerals as of this morning.

Esterne Bruner was a victim of Grand Ravine #1--house burned--and #2--house burned and shot in the arm. And now he has paid the ultimate price for serving his people. He was a known man of peace, a community organizer, a loving father. We are in mourning and we send his family our deepest sympathies. We send our renewed commitment to work with AUMOHD and the CHRC-GR to put an end to this way of life.

Esterne Bruner hosted Tom Luce and Bill Davis on Sept. 3 and took them on an extensive tour of the more than 200 burned homes in Grand Ravine. He was unafraid to be totally visible in his fight for the rights of his community.

What kind of person was Esterne Bruner?

by Evel Fanfan, President of AUMOHD

Bruner was a victim of the first massacre of the defacto group Boniface/Latortue done with the police and the Little Machete Army on August 21, 2005. His house was burned with everything he had along with a shop. He always wanted justice for the victims. This past July he was again a victim of shooting by the group "Little Machete Army". He took a shot in the arm and he never was discouraged from continuing to demand justice and reparation for the victims with the people of Grand Ravin.

July 7 the Little Machete Army burned his house again with all that he had once again. He was always there, at a press conference, at a demonstration to demand justice and reparation for victims. He was the only one who agreed to take Widnise JOCELYN who had lost her mother, father and aunt in one massacre July 7 which has just passed. Judge Amboise gave him the papers as sponsor of Widnise which meant that he had the responsibility as a father of Widnise in spite of the fact that he himself had 5 children under his arm.

Last Monday (9.18.06) he gave a press conference to denounce MINUSTAH which took the rooms of the Grand Ravin high school as a base. Yesterday, Wednesday he was in AUMOHD's office for a meeting in preparation for the people in the morgue. Today (9.21.06)again he was in AUMOHD's office to get papers with AUMOHD and asked the Port-Au-Prince city hall along with the General Hospital to give as authorization to take the bodies without the families having to pay a lot of money. He left the AUMOHD office and would not reach home. The group "The Little Machete Army" assassinated him.

AUMOHD says this is too much! Préval and Alexis must take responsibility for the rights in this case.
