One of the walls of the ravine which makes up the community of Gran Ravin, a poor community of 120,000 approx on the southern part of Port-au-Prince. Gran Ravin has not been featured in reports about inner-city neighborhoods being caught in the violent armed gang activity that other neighborhoods like Cité Soleil have been caught up in. Instead, local leaders have portrayed their community as peace-loving and development minded. Yet at the same time they are strong supporters of the Lavalas party and are strong community activists working for improvement in their lives. Because of this it is preposterous in the minds of these leaders that the Martissant-Gran Ravin massacres were carried out as revenge against bandits in their community. The UN agency for disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration-DDR has been partnered with other service organizations like the International Organization on Migrtation (OIM) in creating community projects, employment, and recreation activities like the "Peace Soccer" games. No armed gangs have been dominating life here that are in need of the military operations that have been so devastating in other communities.
